Contact GM and report this defect. You may be entitled to a free warranty/recall. Have your VIN handy. If they refuse, report the problem to the NHTSA. This may apply pressure to GM.
Most likely the problem is the steering torque sensor. Although the part is not expensive, a high level scan tool is required to properly calibrate the sensor.

There is also the possibility this defect is caused by some other problem such as a loose wire. Good Luck.

Thank you for your reply to my ongoing Malibu saga! I also need to replace throttle body. Rough idle. Smelling a faint gas odor when cold starting.

Before you go tossing out a possibly perfectly good TB, scan the car for codes and follow where they lead. A code does not mean that a part is bad; it means that a system is reporting a problem. Wiring harnesses, plugs, terminals, debris preventing full movement, etc. can all be part of the reason.

Thank you for your response to my power steering system! I will definitely check all components for the system. It has a vibration at idle speed. Bought a throttle body . the one that's on it now don't close all the way.

The TB uses DBW (drive by wire) technology. When the engine is off, it should be fully closed. When it's running, it will be slightly open because there is no IAC like on earlier years with throttle cables.

If this is when you're expecting it to be closed all the way, then you may want to check a manual. There may be an adjustment you can make. My 2011 has never needed adjustment.
