Problem with rear locks

93333 Views 142 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  Malibu Cousin 2009 Aura
I have a 2008 LS Malibu. We purchased it in June of 08. About a month ago the rear locks started sticking when we unlocked the car with both the key fob and from inside the vehicle. Took it into the dealership and they said we needed new actuators. Took it back in this morning to have the actuators replaced and they just called me to tell me that there was water in the rear doors which is probably why the back locks stopped working. Anyone else having this issue? The car is parked in a covered area 99% of the time. The only time it encounters rain is if it is raining when we are driving it.

Yes I just took mine in and there was a recall announced 2 wees ago to have the lock replaced, also alarm goes off for no reason and door ajar light and int lights stay on all linked to the lock. So... they have ordered the part???
The rear passenger lock on mine just stopped working. You can see it try but it can't quite do it. Locking or unlocking from inside or fob. It is the door my kid sits by and we'd have to roll the window down to unlock the door to get him out. I took it into the dealer and they ordered a new actuator. It hasn't been installed yet so I'll follow up with how things went.
same exact problem going to the dealer soon
I've had problems with the left rear door also...possibly the right rear too, but I don't open that one as often....just had an oxygen sensor go out at 12,980 mi. Dealer overfilled with Mobil One at last LOF by one Qt.....car parked on slight down angle and a drip resulted( later found to be an incorrectly installed oil filter gasket) even though I wiped up the evidence and brought it to them, they insisted it was the water pump which they replaced under warranty....the drip showed up again and I checked the original receipt which showed one additional Qt. They then drained a Qt. out, but after a couple of weeks, the leak showed up again...I then opened the hood and noticed the cardboard under the car had a stain directly below the oil fliter (they always said, "It's as dry as a bone under there") an area where there was an opening in the engine compartment...no frame pieces or other any touching material...when the car was on the flat, no drip and the air flowing over it on the way to the dealer dried anything left...with the oil at normal levels, it took a couple of weeks to work through the bad gasket when it was parked in the slight downward angle in the driveway...after a mechanic was sent to my house to verify this, they replaced the filter and gasket and the oil they took out with the filter...when I started it at the dealer, the OBD II light came on...."Oxygen Sensor"....I'm starting to feel a little spooky about this....my '96 Corvette I trust, but...........

After I started having the problems I took the car to the dealer and because it was still under warranty they ordered a new actuator. Turns out that water had gotten into my door. There apparently was some sort of foam that had fallen down and plugged the drain hole. The cleared the hole and then replaced the actuator and everything works fine now. Hopefully the dealer can fix the problem with the new actuator!
I also had a problem with the passenger side rear door lock. Seemed to be 'binding' in its up & down travel. (Scuff marks on the lock plunger, and the 'lock' wouldn't completely 'unlock' with either use of the fob or the interior lock/unlock switch.) Dealership decided the "actuator" was the problem and it was replaced.

Although the lock works well now, the plastic panel near the window wasn't replaced properly at the dealership, which necessitated a return trip to the dealership for 'correction'. Somehow, the placement of the lock plunger (and maybe the actuator) is STILL to high (relative to the plunger on the left rear door) and is sticking up between 1/4" to 1/2" beyond what it originally was.

I'm visiting the dealership tomorrow for an oil / filter change and a tire rotation. I've also asked them to . . PLEASE . . fix the right rear lock to its original position and operation.
Exact same issue with mine 2008 Malibu LTZ front passenger door locks dont work with the key Fob or the switch on the armrest. What is the recall for or TSB on the door locks all door locks or rears anybody know? thanks
There is no recall on this condition and the only TSB pertaining to water intrusion in the locks is this one.

#09-08-64-022: Various Intermittent Electrical Concerns-Door Ajar Message, Interior Lights On, Theft Deterrent Alarm, Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Stays On, Discharged Battery (Diagnose/Repair Door Lock Assembly) - (Jun 2, 2009)

Subject: Various Intermittent Electrical Concerns -- Door Ajar Message, Interior Lights On, Theft Deterrent Alarm, Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Stays On, Discharged Battery (Diagnose/Repair Door Lock Assembly/Circuit)

Models: 2006-2009 Chevrolet Malibu

2006-2009 Pontiac G6

2006-2009 Saturn AURA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition
Some customers may comment on one or more of the following concerns:

• The door ajar message stays on or comes on intermittently.

• The interior lights stay on or turn on intermittently.

• The content theft deterrent alarm goes off intermittently.

• RAP does not cancel when the door is opened allowing the radio, power windows, sunroof and the compass to remain powered up.

• The battery is discharged.

Cause
These conditions may be caused by water intrusion into the door ajar switch (part of the door lock assembly) which causes an incorrect switch status input to the BCM. This condition can be intermittent and wet weather may aggravate this condition.

Correction
Use the following steps to aid in diagnosis of the concern.

Important: DO NOT replace the body control module (BCM) for this concern.

•Use the Tech 2® and monitor the door ajar switch inputs to the BCM. The Tech 2® lists the left front door separately, then all passenger doors together.
•Check if a door ajar message is active with the doors closed. If this condition is not present, washing the vehicle may induce the concern. Note that the vehicle may have to sit for up to two hours.
•If the concern is the RAP does not cancel when the left front door is opened, suspect the left door lock assembly. If the door ajar message is active on the passenger door, it could be any of the other doors.
•Try opening and closing each passenger door one at a time while monitoring the door ajar status to see if one of the doors will cause the message to change to door closed. If it does, suspect that door lock.
•If the message does not change, you can isolate which door is indicating ajar by disconnecting the individual door electrical connector at the pass-through on the pillar side. Always start with the right front door first. If the message changes to door closed when the door is disconnected, suspect that door lock.
Once you have identified the suspect door, refer to SI for complete circuit testing. Refer to Diagnostic Starting Point - Vehicle Access in SI.

I got mine back and it seems ok now. They replaced the actuator. I had my wife take it in so I didn't get any kind of elaboration on the failure.
Visited my dealership this morning. I had a good service 'experience'. Oil change, filter replacement, tire rotation, multi-point 'inspection' (yawn) . . . all done at a 'special price' (some type of promotional happening now).

My passenger rear door lock plunger was also 'repaired' as I expected. Everything works . . . everything looks proper.

I'm happy! The odometer turned over to 25,000 miles returning home from the dealership.

Yeah, this just started happening to my 2008 LT1 about a week ago. The power lock from inside & from the fob does not lock or unlock my right rear passenger side door. If I use the manual it works with no other issues. Waiting for a time when I can bring it into the dealer. Glad to see there was a posting on this site Thanks
Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I just wanted to share my experience with the door locks on my Malibu.

I ended up getting the MajorGuard warranty right after the bumper-to-bumper warranty ended for this car because I knew I will have all sorts of problems with it (have had 4 MAJOR repairs within the first 36,000 miles).

So I took my car to the dealer, because my drivers side front and back door would not lock or unlock with the key-fob on hot days. Sometimes I would lock the car with the key-fob, then check the doors and lo-and-behold, they wouldn't be locked and the alarm would go off. This problem was more pronounced on hot days, but I knew this was going to be a constant problem eventually because of what I've read here at this site.

MajorGuard covers a lot of repair items. The door locks are one of them. So I drop off the car at 4pm and leave it there overnight (I work from 7am to 6pm, so I had to take time off work, which I don't like to do). The dealership gives me a rental from Enterprise (Chevy HHR) and I go home. Knowing that I have MajorGuard, I'm like... I should be covered for the repair, and the rental, since I am leaving the car overnight.

Well... MajorGuard has tricky terms in the agreement.

I get a call from the dealership the next day during lunch and they say they fixed the locks. Total amount of labor time was 1.9 hours. One hour for the front door, and 0.9 hours for the back door.

They say that I will have to pay for the rental, because the total amount of labor needs to be 2 hours or more according to MajorGuard... thats when I get VERY angry. I just couldn't believe it.

Thank goodness that that was not the only issue I brought the car for, I also had an issue with the upper strut mount bearings making noise (but I had to go back to the dealership during my lunch and drive with a technician because they had two people drive it earlier and not hear any noise... I will talk about this in a different thread.)

I was not satisfied by the whole experience, until the next day, when I was going to finally pick up my car after the two repairs were done, they said the rental car would be paid for, in full... so we'll see, cuz right now Enterprise put a $150 hold on my credit card. In the past when I got a rental from the dealer through Enterprise, I ALWAYS had to pay the extra 12 bucks per day because I'm under the age of 25, which I think is unfair. If Chevrolet wants younger buyers, they shouldn't have a rental company that they use for extra loaner vehicles charge customers an underage fee.

The dealer fixed mine under warrenty and fortunately or unfortnately I've only had to put my malibu in the body shop twice. Once for ice falling on my car causing 5k of dammage & once for some one side swiping me in Target's parking lot. Other than that I have not had any issues for two years

Thanks for further proof for everyone that our Chicagoland dealers are the bigest joke for customer service... don't even try to be happy :). Just make your mods semi reversible until you're out of warranty so you can get major stuff covered and call it a day. Sorry to hear about all this, the under 25 thing makes sense but is very frustrating to have to stomach I'm sure.

1 hour and 0.9 hours. SORRY it has to be two. LOL. what a coincidence it only took 54 minutes for the back. Maybe thats the savings since the back doesnt have a drivers control panel. Less buttons = less time right?
HAHA. oh geez. Is it a monopoly if 20 independent businesses conspire?
My 08 Malibu did the same thing on the Right Rear door. Had to hit the button a couple of times. Dealer replaced the actuator.

What Recall? I have never received any notice.

Thanks
Yep... what recall? My door locks just started acting-up too?

Noticed my driver side rear lock was not working like it should. Dealer fixed it and didn't charge me a dime.
Is this a 2008 only issue?
Very common with the 2008 and 2009's. The rear lock strikers were installed slightly off in some cars. Simple fix.
