Anybody else having problems with the trip computer resetting itself at random times? Both A and B trips are doing it. I use trip B for miles on that oil change, and trip A for the tank of gas. The wife never touches it, so I know it's not her. Even if she was, she was out of town this weekend and I put several hundred miles on the car, with it resetting on me. I keep it on average mileage, so I don't know exactly when it happens. But when I went to fill up today, it said I only had 65 miles on that trip, when I had put a couple hundred miles on it before the fill up.

Is it a cluster issue, or is it stored in the computer? I had one other GM vehicle do this before, but I can't remember which one, I've had so many.

If you're under 3/36 take it in to the dealer. If not then other members here will be able to chime in, but it sounds to me like you're in for a BCM reflash or replacement.

GarnetTy1473,

I agree with DrivenDaily; if you are within your Bumper To Bumper warranty guidelines, get the vehicle into the dealership for diagnosis.

Was this weekend the first time that you have experienced this going on in your Malibu? If this is not the first time that you have experienced this, when do you think was the first time with this vehicle?

It's an '09, with 52k miles. Well past the bumper to bumper. I bought it used in Jan of '10 with 28k miles on it. Hard to say when the first time it happened was. I typically only drive it on the weekend, and only when the wife and I are together. If we aren't together, I'm usually driving my Envoy. I work for a Hyundai dealership, so I get a company car to drive, but own nothing but GM. I've been noticing it's becoming much more frequent though. It used to only happen with the trip B, but I would say the trip A has only been occuring the last couple thousand miles. B I wasn't too concerned about, because I change the oil every 5k miles, so I know when it's due without using the trip. When I filled up on Sunday, both A and B trips were under 200 miles. I last changed the oil at 50k miles (2k miles ago), so that's when I reset trip B. If it's a BCM reflash, I guess I'll have to take it to the dealer. I already priced out a BCM for another issue I was having with the engine temp gauge not working, but it turned out to be another problem, and was never replaced. IIRC, the BCM wasn't priced too bad. Half of what the Hyundai ones I sell typically run. I race with a guy that's a tech at the Chevy dealer I deal with. I'll give him a call and see if he's ran into it before.

GarnetTy1473,

Thank you for providing me with additional information. Do you think that the first time that you have experienced this was before your B2B ran out?

It very well could have been. Trip B has been doing it for a long time. A has just been recently.

GarnetTy1473,

Thank you for the additional information. Have you consulted the service department at the dealership that you go to about this?

Michelle P., Chevrolet Customer Service
I called them about an hour ago. Left the service writer I typically deal with a voicemail. Haven't heard back yet.

Got a call back. He said he asked a few of his techs and none had heard of the problem before. No TSB regarding this issue either. Said that typically once a BCM is programmed, it won't need to reprogrammed, and even if they did, he doubts it would fix the problem.

I know this an old thread but I just had this issue yesterday. I reset both trips when I bought the car and never touched Trip A and it had about 1,000 miles on it and then I noticed it when it was at 16 miles. I have 34k miles on my car so I'm thinking I should take it in like DD suggested.

Here's how it is supposed to work (from the big book):

TRIP A and TRIP B
The DIC displays the vehicle trip odometer mileage based on the vehicle speed information from the body control module (BCM). The trip odometer displays accumulated km (mi) since the last reset of this value. The trip odometer is capable of displaying up to 999.9 km (999.9 mi). Trip odometer information is not retained when the battery is disconnected. Press and hold the INFO button on the DIC for 1 second in order to reset the trip odometer display.

Thank you VERY much. I was going to ask if it was because it rolled over 999.99 miles but wasn't quite sure. Because my buddy's avenger is at about 3500 and still going. Thanks for clearing that up.
