Somewhere on this forum I posted what I believed was accurate information about the remote start feature, specifically that you can extend it from 10 minutes to 20 minutes by pressing the lock/start again.

That is not accurate. It will accept the command while the car is running via remote, but it will not extend the time to 20 minutes. If you want to run the car for 20 minutes you'll have to run it the first 10 and then start it again for the second 10.

Sorry for misleading anyone.

EDIT: See my post below...

interesting, but on mine the remote start will only work once for 10 minutes. If I try to start it again using the remote start after the 10 minutes it will just flash the signals but not start up.

My owners manual states you can extend the run time 10 min more for a total of 20 min run time. It states during first 10 min run press lock/start and it will extend run time.

I tried that a number of times before I wrote that post. I just tried it again and wouldn't ya know it worked! I'm glad you took the time to say it does work 'cuz I wouldn't have tried it again.

Started at 3:05 (Eastern time), then re-sent lock/start at 3:10, ran until 3:25 and shut off.

I stand corrected, and quite happy, too! Thanks!

I wish it worked from further away. I never use it due to this. I had an aftermarket one in an '98 Malibu I had years ago and that thing worked from like a 1/4 mile away. This one maybe 75 feet.

Yeah, me too! I had a 2-way on my '85 Mercury that I moved to my '97 Pontiac. It worked 2 blocks away and beeped when the signal was received.

Well if distance is an issue, has anyone considered upgrading to the advanced remote start fobs? I believe it has the ability to work at longer distances than the regular fobs.

Only thing I wish the remote had was a response when the car is started. A simple beep or vibrate would do wonders.
The screen on the advanced start would show you that.

Yes, if you paid the dealer for it. IIRC our selling dealer wanted $300 for the option and then $200 to install it. Declined it.

Im not asking for anything much but just a beep or something to let ya know. Its pretty pointless to remote start your car in a mall parking lot 200ft away because you cant hear the horn honk nor the car start that far away usually.

Yea, it is a pretty penny but I doubt it is that expensive now. I paid $300 for the remote start feature on my Silverado and could have gotten the advanced fobs for only $100 more, the only thing that deterred me from the upgrade was the larger size of the remote. I guess we can't have everything right?

Wow really?
Mine seems to work from pretty far away. I have been starting my car from my desk which is on the 2nd floor of the building... My car is usually about 150ft or more away from where I sit and it also has to go through a couple of walls... Works every time for me.

Yes. It was a Black Widow. One remote was 2-way, the other was 1-way (like the ones we get with our cars). The 2-way had an LCD display that showed when the hood, trunk, or door was ajar, or if the car was running (3 little smoke poofs out the back), and a few other things.

There are other brands out there with 2-ways, and they run from ~$100 - ~$400, depending on brand and options.

I read in the manual where the car should cut off when you stick the key in the ignition during a remote start but mine doesn't

Well I am 100% sure they are available for my Silverado, but the Bu I am not sure about. Here is a pic from GM Accessories site.

It shows an advance start remote as being available for the 2009 Malibu as well, here: http://www.chevrolet.com/malibu2009/pictures/ (click on Accessories at the bottom left)

Does anyone know if the advance start keyfob works with the existing remote start feature? Or does the advance start remote require components being switched out under the hood as well?

I'm pretty sure it should only cut off if the brake pedal is pushed in, in case someone gets into the car while on. I could be wrong, I'm not one to read the owners manual unless I'm stumped on a feature or something.

I think all you would need is to purchase the fobs and have them programed to the vehicle. All the critical components are already there.

I found this info on the 2-way fobs......

DESCRIPTION:
Introducing the innovative 2-Way Advanced Remote Start. Now available for select GM vehicles (see below for detailed vehicle application information). The 2-Way Advanced Remote Start allows customers to upgrade their factory keyless entry or factory remote start systems to provide enhanced functionality. The key fob transmitter provides immediate visual and audio confirmation that a key fob command (like start vehicle, lock/unlock doors, etc.) was received. The large, easy-to-read LCD screen displays status/data when within range of the vehicle such as Fuel Level, Tire Pressure, Odometer Reading (accurate within 1 mile), Clock/Remote Start Countdown Timer, and Key Fob Battery Life Indicator. Customers with vehicles equipped with steering wheel controls (UK3) can even scroll through their pre-set radio stations.**

* Up to three times as far as factory remote keyless entry
