Ok guys, I need some advice. Yesterday I decided to play with the paddle shifters. I have only used them a handful of times and I have always found that the auto was faster than the manuel mode. That being said, it was a perfect day to get some carbon out of the motor. :D I hardly ever drive this car hard, but it always goes when I ask of it. I pulled up to a red light, tuned off the traction control (just for fun) shifted into "M" and took off on the green. I was super suprised when I chirped the tires shifting into second.

At the next light I thought, ok that was fun, one more time. This time I took off again, chirped the tires again, then...rev limiter...I think

I don't know if I missed a shift or it the revs just climed way to quick...but I looked down and swore that the RPM'S were hovering / stuck at about 7000!!!!!
There is no way this is a 7000 RPM motor. Maybe 6400 or so?!?! Anyways, it scared the hell out of me and I gingerly went directly home. Does the Malibu have a rev limiter? If so, what it the red line on the 3.6??? My car has the older dials so there is no "visual" redline. I was also suprised that the car let me hold the gear like that without automatically shiting.

I just hope I didn't do any damage to the vehicle, but I guess I have a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty...

Yes it has a rev limiter. I've hit mine a couple of times. The paddles shifters are too slow to respond. You kinda have to anticipate and hit the paddle shifter a little earlier than you would think, especially on the lower gears because the revs come up much faster. I had a 98 regal before my malibu with the supercharged v-6 and you could put it in low and stomp on the gas and it would shift through the gears anyway.

It has a rev limiter, and very aggressive torque management. The TM kicks in before a shift so you don't get to hard of a shift. This also slows the car down. It kinda sucks. To be quite honest, with a stock tune I don't see how the torque management let you get a 1-2 chirp unless you were on a very slippery surface.

Like I said, I was very suprised as well. I give three variable that may have made that possible. 1) The stock Goodyear LS2's suck. 2) I was on concrete, not asphalt, and I would consider it polished from traffic. 3) It was a nice 62 degrees outside and the car was feeling extra peppy.

I read last night that the fuel cutoff / rev limiter is 7000 RPM for the 3.6. Heh...who knew...a 7000 RPM Chevy sedan...cool
