Hey everyone, I have been experiencing this now for a couple of days.

While coming to a quick stop at a stop sign or red light or on a highway exit. I hear what sounds like a rumble that seems to be shutting off when the car is coming to a stop.

Kind of like a generator dying down after being powered off. Which I can mostly feel is coming from the front of the car.

It only does this type of noise when stopping from quick speeds around 30-40mph.

But no noise when its regular stop and go traffic.

Any ideas on what is should be? Maybe its the ABS? Has anyone else come accross this problem?

Im thinking about getting it checked out sometime soon, but thought to see what you all think about it.

Thanks in advance!

I think you're on the right track with the ABS. Do you feel it in the pedal and/or the steering wheel? Does the pedal get harder to press or feel different than normal braking? Is it wet out or do you seem to have reduced traction when braking hard? These would all contribute to the ABS engaging, since it may be sensing it needs to help you with your braking.

Have your dealer check the brake pads. I have been having this same problem since I bought the car. At 5,000 miles the first dealer said the brakes were still settling in which was total crap. At 7,000 miles I took it to a different Chevy dealer and they replaced the brake pads and said that the 2010 Malibu needed a different type of brake pad. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem. Rumbling if you hit the brake at about 70mph. Im getting the run around from the dealer. Can you tell me what they told you about the brakes or what they wrote on the service request form.

It got so bad that im thinking of putting ECB GREEN STUFF PADS and ROTORS.

I just started having this problem too. At 8000 kms my brakes should still be fine.

Sometimes the brakes feel normal, other times they rumble as if the pads had worn all the way down. I'm booking an appt. with my dealer, I'll update this thread after my visit.

Took the car to the dealer yesterday.

A tech drove the car while I rode shotgun, of course we couldn't duplicate the problem at first, 15 minutes later still nothing and as were about to return to the dealership, the brakes started acting up.

The tech thought it might be some rust particles falling from the rotors and making the pads act up. I left the car there as it needed it's first oil change too. A few hours later I picked it up, they didn't say what caused the problem, but had changed the pads. The brakes are fine now.

Just thought I'd mention, before buying my car I'd never dealt with this dealership before.
I'm so happy I bought from these guys, they treat you like gold.

The technician was very patient. I was concerned the symptoms wouldn't show up and trying to make him believe the brakes have problems and he told me not to worry he'll have a good look at them.

When the customer shuttle was busy and couldn't pick me, they paid for a cab so I could get my car right away without waiting.

There also giving me a rental for the day while they do some recall work next week.

So far GM has impressed the hell out of me.

Good to hear of your positive experience with the service.:) The question is, will the problem come back? I have a suspicion that changing pads and resurfacing rotors can't be the answer in all these cases.

I think you may be right.

What I found strange was when I mentioned to the service advisor that Malibu owners were reporting unusual brake problems, he said "that's news to me".

Drove almost 200 miles today, brakes worked great, hope everyone else having problems has their issue resolved in a good way.

Same problem and fix here as well... Some heavy vibration during moderate to heavy braking. The dealer re-surfaced the rotors and replaced all pads. Stops smooth as silk now.

You could have some uneven corrosion on the back side of the rotor where you can't see it without pulling the wheel. Sometimes a grinding like that can be caused by overheating the brake pads and they leave uneven transfer layer deposits on the rotors. However, those would be clearly be seen on the rotor face. They would like intermittent dark spots that seem to be darker over the open space of the rotors internal cooling vanes. None of that stuff is major or anything to be worried about. The brake pad wear sensors will let you know when the pads are wearing down and when you hear them they will be distinctive and you will know it is time to get some work done.

I had kind of a similar problem when performing hard braking, it was worse when going around a turn. I traced my problem back to low power steering fluid, thanks to the cheapo dealer not filling it properly during the pre-delivery inspection.

mm1515,

So, by you adding more break fluid to your vehicle, it fixed the problem? I apologize that your experience with that particular dealership was not up to your standards. Since this visit that you were referring to, have you found a dealership that you feel comfortable with?

ABS if you're trying to slow too quickly ,(brake pressure goes up and down , more efficient way to stop with out skidding) loud and kinda scary though, OR time for new routers ..

If the ABS goes on when trying to slow down at a normal pace, have the ABS checkd out

Just a little note on grammar for folks:

Breaks are what you get when you drop a dozen eggs.
Brakes slow a vehicle.

Routers are power tools.
Rotors (in this vein) are what the brake pads press against.

Michelle:
I fixed my problem by adding power steering fluid, not brake fluid.
As far as the dealer is concerned, they have done a great job for me in the past, so this one problem with their workmanship is not enough to make me go elsewhere.

My brakes rumble real loud AND vibrate but ONLY under heavy braking especially at freeway speeds. It isn't noticeable under normal braking, even at highway speeds. I nearing 70k miles tho, so im not complaining.
