I have done this to my minitruck, but mine was paint.

I have never seen a wrap, seems like there is too many chances of it peeling up on corners, or if someone dings the wrap to hard, it might look like a chipped bumper sticker. But then again I see alot of RV's and cars with advertisements done pretty well.

Cool idea though I guess if done right and awesome material used. Prob would look killer on a Bu! Mad max/darth vader look. So easy to clean I bet !

I do think paint might be cheaper and last longer if done right. I mean $499 might be the same as paint, but I am no expert. When I did my mini truck, black mat/hot rod satin black only cost me under $100 and thats doing it myself, just borrowed a gun and compressor. Just have to figure materials. But I am sure you want it done clean and right, mine was kinda ghetto lol ! Just my 2cents

I wanted to do that to my old car, which didn't have as many contours as the bu. Sign Zoo quoted me some stupid crazy price like 3k. So like bowtieman said for that you can get a pretty nice paint job. Plus if you get any rock chips or scratches it rips, then what? If your stuck on flat black and your 100% sure about it then paint it. Pretty sure that one from cardomain is painted. Looks sick though

I totally LOVE matte black on cars. BUT, it needs to be on the right car, like an exotic or muscle car. IMO the Malibu isn't "cool" enough for it. Plus, that price is too cheap for a good wrap. Good wraps cost over $1000 with good vinyl and labor. Also a top notch, proper matte paint job will be much more. To me wraps are dumb, if you're gonna do it, do it right with paint. The Malibu in that other thread is paint by the way, and does look really good I must admit, even not being on an exotic/muscle car.

Another great advantage paint has over the wrap is, depending on the original color of the car, your door jams would be glossy! If you have a light color or bright color, might look kinda strange when you open the doors. I like everything matching. If the paint is done right they will take the time to do the jams as well. All about the details!

I have seen this done on a TV car show. I would not want to even to attempt it by myself! There is more to it than you think! Making the right cuts, getting the air bubbles out!

If you are serious about doing this, I would have an professional / someone that has some experience doing this on cars do it for you!

I agree with Silver LTZ, it maybe a good idea to look into doing it with paint! Either way it is going to cost you a lot of pretty pennies!

The vinyl or paint? Good quality of either wouldn't. Glossy finishes are more likely to fade actually.
A friend of mine had his jetta painted flat black, it lasted about a year, and started fading. I'm not sure how official the paint job was though, and I don't believe he would have spent over a grand on it.

Number 1, flat black is totally different then matte/satin. Matte/satin has a slight sheen, flat is well, flat.
Number 2, if it faded after a year, no matter what color is wasn't taken care of and was a crap job. A good paint job is not under a grand....you get what you pay for as I'm sure he knows now. :D

I agree with number 2, in regards to number 1, I thought flat, and matte paint were the same thing just matte has a smoother finish. I googles it and looked at images but they where wrong, I saw the same lambo in both searches, plus a few normal black paint jobs.

On a side note, the paint job looks so delicate, as if you ran your finger nail down it, it would cause a mark, I doubt it would though if your paying a few thousand for the paint job.

yea I know a buddy that got his painted right and its been on for 2 years and still looks brand new. The vinyl also lasts a good while as long as its a good brand. That link I supplied was more to show what I liked not a reference to a good brand. I don't even know what brands are good when it comes to that though. Hopefully I can get a good deal on whatever I decide to do :)

I tried starting something a while back to get a black vinyl overlay for the roof of the Malibu's. There wasn't much interest in it. I still think it would look awesome.

Matte is smoother then flat yes, also it has a little sheen to it while flat is very dull.

The paint isn't any more delicate then the regular kind, actually with the exception of making sure you remove bugs and bird crap right away is easy as it doesn't need to be waxed or polished.

Ive worked with good wrap before, good wrap being 3m Di-Noc. The stuff is just downright amazing, adhesion is awesome and it forms just about to anything. Best thing you can relate it to is stretchable and formable window tint. Upon heating up the material is very pliable but as soon as it cools down it forms a somewhat hard shell which is quite scratch/damage proof. Obviously if you take a knife to it with some pressure it'll rip but I actually think its more scratch resistant than actual paint, so basically if you treat it like your car normally was painted than you'll be more than fine to avoid rips or scratches.

Oh and matte paint just can not compare to the effects of matte vinyl.
