Service Traction and ESC

Once in a while, I get the message to service traction and ESC. Now the wrinkle to all of this is that, if I turn the car off and restart, it goes away. Anyone have this issue? It has happened a few times now and is never there when I restart the next time.

Thanks.

Randomly my engine feels like it bucks or hesitates while shifting, just feels slightly erratic and then the ESC and Traction warning lights come on. I have had the car stall a couple times while coming to a stop. I believe there may be an engine misfire that is causing it. Haven't had time to scan for codes while it happens.
If you create a new thread with your issues I will try to help.

A little punctuation would go a long way.

Did you mean the ABS/Traction light came on the steering wheel and you were spinning out of control? Oh, no, you meant the light came on, and the steering wheel was spinning out of control.

You also seem to indicate that you lost power steering , the car is not drivable, and the car is still at the dealership because they don't know what's wrong.

Will they ever discover the reason or was it left there because they can't figure out how to fix it, and you just decided to give them a toy?

Exactly. I am so done with trying to interpret texting.

@Armarnett, I realize yesterday was a holiday, but I’m curious if you have heard any updates from the dealership about your Malibu.

I has my Service ESC light come on last night. Looked at the owner's manual, it said to just restart the car. The wife took the car later on the in the evening, when she tried restarting the car the light was still on. This morning I decided to go check and as soon as I put it in gear it turned on.

Car is currently at dealer, will see what they think the issue is.
They told me it was a code C0710, a problem with the steering wheel position sensor. They were unable to replicate and just clear the code.

I got this message about 3 times in the 2 1/2 years I owned my 2010 Malibu. I just shut the car off, and restarted it and it went away. If it happens infrequently, it's probably just a temporary issue with a sensor that resets itself when you restart the car.
The brake computer sets that code when it gets nonsensical input from the SWP sensor. Could be the sensor itself or an issue in the wiring harness. The sensor is not hard to swap out but it may fix nothing to do so.

Without good input from that sensor the brake computer disables traction Control & ESC for the remainder of the drive cycle.

Cadillac had this problem for awhile & that turned out to be due to fretting corrosion in the sensor connector IIRC.
@Dalecon, did you make sure they provided you with a print out of the concern even though they couldn’t duplicate it? Having this type of documentation could prove to be helpful in the future if needed.

Sure did the invoice put down the error, that they cleared and then could not replicate.
Perfect, Dalecon.

Happy Holidays!

Are there any General Motors dealerships close to you? How far is the nearest Chevrolet dealership?

Hi Michelle. I had to take my car back to the dealership today because the ignition wouldn't shut off. Key would not turn off. Another guy was in there with the very same problem. Seems there was a recall, but somehow I missed getting the letter. While I was there, I had the service airbag checked. It was a loose connecter in the dash so I was there for 6-1/2 hours waiting for part and installation. While there, I was talking to the other guy who also said he had the airbag light occasionally blinking on in his HHR. Mine was corrected, and I learned from them that the airbag WILL NOT deploy if that light is on. At the time I learned this, the other guy in with the same ignition problem had already gone. Coincidentally, I narrowly escaped a major accident on the interstate a couple of days ago when a guy did not see me and cut into my lane. The airbag would not have deployed per the service dept. Guess it is a good thing that my ignition quit since I was forced to take the car in, but considering that more than one of us is having issues with service airbag light blinking on then why hasn't there been a factory recall on that? I also learned today that the "bumper to bumper" "covers everything" warranty that GMAC had me buy or they would not finance has a deductible of $200 which none informed me of. Not only do I have a car that has had all kinds of issues, and not only did I pay a significant $ amount upon purchase for that warranty, but I have to pay for that airbag problem $175 and might have been killed 2 days ago had I not been so quick to swerve away from that nut on the interstate. So toward the 5th hour of waiting, I decided I would not buy another Chevy. Love the car except for the maintenance issues.

Michelle, my HHR just passed 48,000 miles. Had about 48,030 after driving to the dealership. My full "bumper to bumper" "covers everything" warranty is 5 years 100,000 miles. My first car 34 years ago was a Chevy. I've never had a car of any make or model that has had so many issues as this one.

You really should post this in the HHR forum unless I'm missing something.

Linda,
Not sure who taught you to drive but when you see warning lights on the dash they do have a meaning and you need to determine why they have been turned on. Not sure what you mean by having maintenance issues since you won't find much better on the market. Most 3 year old cars average about 2 trips to a service facility per car. Doesn't matter whether it is a Toyota, Chevy, BMW or some other brand. Toyota's might average 1.75 trips while Chevy's may average 2.25 trips but that difference is pretty much insignificant. This is documented quite well in the JD Power Dependability Studies of 3 year old vehicles. That average has been about the same for the last 10 to 12 years.

As for purchasing a service plan I have never heard of a finance company insisting you purchase a service plan. Sounds like you took bait, hook, line, sinker and fishing pole when this was explained to you. As for the $200 deductible that is something else you should have known. You might have been able to get a zero deductible for the same price if you had been paying attention and negotiating.

I am coming across a little strong but you need to pay attention when you are signing contracts. No matter whether you are buying a car, house or some other item.

Good counsel from BillD64 and greenman!

Linda_B, if you don't have a Malibu is there any particular reason you're posting here?

Interesting reply Bill. First to the other posters, I originally posted here because it is a Chevy forum discussing the ESC Traction Control and the only one I found on the internet at the time that I began looking for the issue taking my NEW car back to the Chevy dealership 3 times for the same issue. My post was to Michelle who works for Chevy and I'm assuming is interested in assisting customers of all of their products.

Reading contracts? Sorry, there was no warranty contract. I got a handy dandy little pocket brochure of the fantastic warranty program. That is all. The finance guy at my handy dandy friendly neighborhood authorized Chevy dealership neglected to tell me the details and yes did force me to buy the warranty in order to get GMAC financing. That is, just for you, to spell it out General Motors Acceptance Corporation. Affiliated with selling Chevy's, correct? If you are implying that the customer (me) is at fault, do you by chance work for Chevy because that might explain a lot?

Pay attention to the lights? Yes, you are right on that. The old gentleman in with the same issue said his blinks on too, but he was not getting it fixed that day. A suggestion to engineering is that the error message read "Airbag Inoperative, Service required" since I ran this past several in the QA dept in which I work and they were as shocked as I was that the airbag was inoperative and also that my car would not shut off.

I appreciate your coaching, but though I have a female name I don't have a female background. I've worked plenty on my own cars, worked manufacturing power and controls, machine and equipment startups from both electrical and mechanical perspective, had some time in R&D working consumer oriented research, a couple of patents, and now I work in quality assurance actually reviewing consumer comments from last month just today. I can tell you, my response will NEVER be to blame the consumer for quality issues. But, thanks for your concern about my ignorance;-)

I can't argue with your stats on new cars back to the dealership, and thanks for providing them. My experience is to not have service issues on my new cars. I had one recall on my first new one which was a Chevy Chevette. That is all in 34 years of driving. No issues with my new Silverado, none with my new Toyota Corolla, and none with my new Hyundai Accent. Standard maintenance only in the first 3 years. After the 3 years I had to replace a water pump in my Silverado at some point. For my used cars, the Toyota Celica did require a new starter and a new solenoid but it had 200,000+ miles on it. The Ford Mustang I had to replace an electric window motor. So, are you saying I was just lucky and this HHR is the new norm?
Interesting that you find yourself faultless after so many years of owning and driving cars and all the work you've done. I assure you that I honestly believe you to be a truly intelligent person. Where I find the fault is that you didn't do your homework for yourself.

With all your experience in life you are almost assuredly aware that lawyers and car salesmen (or women) rate the lowest on the list of trustworthy people. That said, a few simple questions and/or a simple "No" would have stopped or slowed the salesperson's requirement to buy A to get B. That is where we all see that you failed yourself. The salesperson simply took advantage of you and laughed all the way to the bank.

Is the HHR the current normal? I sure hope not! This is my first new car in my life. (I know I owned an '09 but it was sold as "new" with 1252 miles, scratches, and rust showing. It was signed for before delivery from out-of-state, after which I learned my lesson.)

I sincerely hope you can reach an amicable resolution on your issues. You're welcome to share here, but also please realize that since this is a public forum you're gonna get all sorts of folks replying, and that means a lot of scrutiny on what you post.
