2003 Malibu,

We've been trying to set the horn chirp so that it will chirp when the car locks.

I go by what the manual says but have been unsuccessful. IIRC the manual says to put the key in the on position and push and hold the lock button in lock position for 10 seconds. At 10 seconds the horn will chirp telling you the programing was successful.

I've tried all of the above using the lock button in the car, on the fob, lock button in the unlock position (which after 10 seconds produced a beeping from the car), car started, car not started with the ignition switch in the on position etc., every combination I can think of but it still doesn't work.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I trying to do something that the vehicle will just not do?

It sounds like you second guessed yourself a little. You just needed to hold the door lock switch in the unlock position for 10 seconds with all the doors closed and key on until you hear the horn chirp. Repeat the same to undo.

Did that, still didn't work.

Sounds like I have a problem somewhere in the system then.

Maybe the passenger side door lock switch is stuck in the lock or unlock position? If not, I'm out of ideas.
