I dont want to add more choices but as you had asked for opinions, I too began my search with the Chevy Malibu and test drove both the 4 and v6. I have owned numerous cars and trucks and only purchased from the big 3. I did like the Malibu and I feel Chevy has a great car here, the ride of the v6 seemed nicer than the 4 with the same trim level.
The dealer I was working with tried pushing me into a color that I really didnt want (something about GM bonus cash for that color car...). So I walked away at that time and started looking at other cars,. Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and the Mazda 6. I am not sure if you test drove the Mazda 6 but as a side note it is assembled in the same plant as the current Ford Mustang and Ford owns a part of MazdaUSA.
You cant go wrong with the Malibu and as others have said I would be hesitant on Chrysler products (other than the new Ram or Jeep Wrangler) as my last vehicle was a dodge and I traded it in within 2 years of purchase because of build quality.
Best of luck and when it comes down to it,. buy whichever brings a smile to your face and be sure to test drive the car over roads you drive daily if you can to see if it brings out any hidden features you may have to live with.
