I've read the posts regarding the six speed fluid being lifetime. However for those who would like to be able to check if the fluid level is correct and possibly drain it at certain intervals, what is the procedure with the I4 engine? I ask because I just traded in a vehicle which was new, had no trans dipstick and its trans failed. Just looking for the procedure for my own good. Some may say go to the dealer. Well I did, asked two techs about Dexos engine oil and neither knew a thing about it nor the trans fluid level question. Thanks

For those interested I found the information to check atf fluid level in a 6T40E trans.
Fluid needs to be 185-203 F, vehicle level, engine running, in park. Remove the 11mm plug on the drivers side of the trans just to the rear of the axle shaft. ATF should dribble out. If not, add fluid until it drips out.
To replace the fluid, remove the drain plug on bottom of trans, install drain plug to 106 lb in, and fill the trans as noted above. To note, every transmission mechanic I discussed this with said to change the fluid every 30000-50000 miles. They are the people repairing transmissions, not the individuals who engineered it. Food for thought.
Hope this helps, Tony

Thanks for checking it out. Would you be able to find the same info for the V6 as quickly? I'd sure like to know and I'd bet others would as well.

For dipstick models:
Fluid should be 185-203 F, engine running, trans in park. Level should be within the crosshatch area, not above. The manual stresses the importance of checking the fluid when its temp is 185-203, to check twice, read both sides of the dipstick, and not to add more than one half pint at a time if it is low. Hope this helps. Tony

What about for the I4 4-speed transmission? Same as the I4 6-speed above, just drain and refill? You don't have to do a full vacuum flush or filter replacement?

I'm at 60K and still haven't changed it yet...
