I have a 2008 Malibu LS.

The speedometer needle jerks from one speed to another, instead of moving smoothly between speeds.

When accerlerating from say from 30 mph to 35 mph the needle will jerk to the 35 mph mark.

However when slowing down the needle moves smoothly as it slows down in speed.

Sounds like there is an issue with the cluster itself. The motor behind the needles goes bad and can become stuck or do like what you described. It isn't uncommon for it to happen, I generally see it happen more in trucks than cars though. A dealership can do a gauge sweep with the tech 2 scan tool and watch it to see what happens. Most likely it will be the cluster though.
