My daughters 2014 Malibu is sputtering, but only when accelerating with the a/c running. When the a/c is off there’s no problem. The air is cool after putting it on a high setting. The engine light came on around the time this started, shut off itself, and now it is on again

she lives in Florida, could it be the heat?

Have her take the car to an auto parts store such as autozone. They will read the codes, free of charge.

Engine light is on for a reason as a problem has been detected. Just because it's still running doesn't mean it's OK.
Flashing engine light means your killing the expensive catalytic convertors, that why the flashing mode if it flashes while driving.
