bought some suede and vinyl sunday for really cheap. started doing my headliner and pillar pieces today. its kinda a warm orangish/brown similar to some of the bmw's and benz's. i went really cheap so this stuff does not stretch and too many concave/convex bubbles and corners make it a p.i.t.a.!

i'll try to put up as many pictures as i can throughout the build. stay tuned!

This sounds interesting and I would like to see pictures of the finished project. Good luck in the work, interior work like that is a pin to get right.

got the headliner, and B and C pillars wrapped today. B pillars were really hard towards the top where it flares out as this stuff i bought does NOT stretch at all but i got it to work. waiting to do the A pillars as i'm going to fit some large format tweeters in there and still have to fabricate them.

living in L.A. has it's perks; i went to the fashion/fabric district downtown and bought everything i'd need for under 50 bucks! 6yd for both suede and vinyl!

few more pics. again, i bought cheap suede and it did NOT flex whatsoever and was extremely difficult to put on. note to self, spend a little more money and get flexible material!

Would you happen to have a sunroof? Would you mind snapping a pic of the roof if you do? I was looking to install a sunroof and was wondering if there was additional support and if it was included on all Malibu's.

Nice job on the headliner btw, those rarely come out good always having pockets where adhesive didn't stick right. Make sure you use the good stuff!

thanks guys! no sunroof, unfortunately. i only have two small pockets where it didn't stick and it wasnt because of the adhesive i used. the material was just too damn tight to get in every area. remember, this is faux suede (looks just fine) and i only spent 20 bucks for the whole piece. matter of fact, the adhesive i used was more expensive.

btw, wrapped one piece of the B pillar bottom in vinyl and it looks awesome!

you know, gerrard, the thought had occurred actually. however, im concerned with the air bag and how it might deploy. i've already been told that a guy near me is really good at matching custom colors and spraying them on vinyl. this might come in handy because i plan on rewrapping my doors and eventually recovering my seats in leather.

btw, got the sun visors done today, and boy oh boy it was a pain in the ass! i had spots where too much adhesive was used and i got 'soak spots' that would not come out, so i had to rip it all off and start again , but only on the driver's side. i'm almost ready to put everything back in but i figured i'd replace all the lights with l.e.d.s while i've gotten it taken apart. any suggestions?

You're right, i never thought of that..
but since they are going to be individually and lightly wrapped it won't make much of a difference.
As far as painting it, which seems way easier, wouldn't it peel off or have a stinky smell??

wish i had a camera to show you guys, but i put down the suede on the dash and it looks AWESOME! i took out the silver trim too and it's scheduled to be a shiny, piano black when i'm done with it.

i'm getting little bits done at a time, so be patient and i will post pics soon!

work in progress update....

so, i've had most of the suede pieces installed now for a few months and they've experienced some high heat/direct sunlight scenarios. suffice it to say, i'm getting alot of bubbling. i'm a perfectionist and i'm taking it all out to try another adhesive. in lieu of using cheaper spray adhesives, i went with a brush-on contact cement (dap/weldwood contact cement). so far, this seems to do the job.

btw, silver trim pieces are now mostly all black and look freaking sexy!

i will snap some pics once i get to a respectable point.

tom, my exterior is black granite. interior was all ebony, cloth seats. hopefully i can tackle the seats next year, and yes, the leather should be dyed to match.
