A whining noise has just started to happen when I turn the steering wheel at low speed turns in either direction.
Had it in shop and dealer has decided to order a new rack.
They did install a new intermediate steering unit but that wasn't problem as I had to go out with service tech to have him hear problem.
My malibu is a 2008 with 3.5L engine with 28,000 miles.
From some internet searches I see that 2006-2008 malibu and pontiac G6
cars may be prone to this problem.
Has anyone else had this problem with rack and pinion assembly?

My old G6 GTP had the whole rack replaced, and my LTZ is starting to make some noise when turning at slow speeds now. Next time I take it in for service I am gonna have them address it.

I don't remember this being a issue in the 80's with GM? And I have owned a '86 442, '86 Z28, '89 IROC and '89 GTA. Never recall this being an issue except for the Epsilon platform.

My wife had a 80's something Beretta and it developed a rack problem after the warranty was over. The mechanic said it was a common GM problem with several models. In cold weather, the steering would be really stiff (almost like it didn't have power steering) for maybe the first 1/4 mile. It never got worse, but it never went away either.

It was on the front drive cars. Both of my Citations were inflicted with it. The 82 quit at just 32K. Of course it was out of warrantee because it was already 6 years old when it happened, as I bought it from my grandfather's estate. The 83 went at 80K or so.

I just got call from dealer that rack came in to do repair. Have it scheduled for Monday.
I hope this gets rid of sounds when turning.
I just read about GM lawsuit against JTEKT corp.
Wonder if they supply rack assembly for malibu.
GM did not mention malibu in press release but I would imagine they would try to avoid so because it is their best selling car.
If anyone has info on who makes rack assembly for malibu please advise.

Had the rack replaced last week on my 08 Malibu 2LT 3.6. It had the noise described above and it went away completely after being replaced. I hope this is the end to my steering problems. Pump and rack have both been replaced.

our steering just starting making noise the past couple days not sure what it is like a studder when turning at slow speeds
Keep an eye on it, that is usually how it starts....mine does it sometimes but not alot. And seems to be when it's cold then it goes away. Hasn't gotten worse, which is why I haven't brought it in yet. Don't want them to mess something else up LOL. I am watching it though....

I'm most likely bringing the car in for the tranny "reflash", so I might have them address it then.

Just picked up car from dealer.
Noise was coming from Steering gear.
They replaced gear and did alignment adjustments.
Sound is gone.
Hopefully it won't come back.
This would have cost $1,000 if not under warranty.

Had my steering rack on '08 2LT V6 replaced in late April (about 11k miles). It has 17k miles now and is making pretty regular noise again and is getting harder to steer. Should work more than 6k miles!

Just got it back from having airbag service alarm fixed. Mine too has the ghost in the gas cap alert. I think it only goes on one way. Seems like when I flip cap vertically light goes off...but also have noticed mine does show less fuel next am parked level in my garage after traveling 8 blocks from station where was filled. Just like other person has said...fueling and driving hours the light doesn't come on and gauge is accurate. I don't know...gremlins?
