Steering wheel moving by itself on I4 (all threads combined here)

88247 Views 80 Replies 26 Participants Last post by  Chevrolet Customer Svc
I've had my Malibu for over a year now. Today while driving to work I noticed that the steering felt like it was pulsing when I turned; definitely not normal. When I got to work and put it in park the steering wheel was moving back and forth on its own. I started it back up later and it is still doing the same thing. I'll call the dealer tomorrow but has anyone else had anything like this happen?

Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

I've felt it move a little in my hands at a stop, but nothing like you've described....keep us posted!
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

I've noticed something like this too.....Let us know what you find out!
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

They said it was hunting for center because it couldn't find it for some reason. They wanted to know if it had had an alignment anywhere else. Nobody has ever worked on it other than the dealer. They thought maybe a pothole or something could had done it. I told them I drove it home from work and it was fine and when I left for work the next day it was doing it as soon as I pulled out of the driveway. They re-calibrated the steering and said it should be good. I drove maybe 5 miles or so down the road and it started doing it again. I turned around and went back. They put me in another car and said they'd call me in a day or two. At this point they aren't sure what is going on and said it wasn't a common problem and one they haven't seen before.
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

Well I got the car back. They replaced the entire motor and control assembly. I have to admit they got it fixed pretty quick. I guess they have a regional part depot and just pull the parts from there when needed from what they told me. I guess time will tell but I drove it probably 35 miles so far and everything seems good and all back to normal.
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

I was checking for complaints on the same problem and it seems that others have had this happen as well. I added my complaint to the NHTSA database since there were others with the same problem. Hopefully this will help them compile some useful data. I worry now after seeing the other complaints that the problem will happen again when I am not under warranty.

Search by vehicle and choose steering when it comes to that and you can see others with the same sounding problem. I wonder how many others have gone unreported.
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

Yes. Mine did the same thing on Oct 9,2009 and the dealership said it was the electronic power steering chip was going out. Needless to say, they said they fixed it. Well as of today, Oct 20, they towed it back to the dealership because it started doing it again on my way to work. It is not safe to drive it when it is doing that because if it goes out completely it could lock up the steering wheel. Good luck with yours.. this is the third issue that I have had with mine. First, it was in the shop 3 times for the onstar, then the A/C was leaking into the passanger back floor and now the electronic power steering. I hate to wonder...what next???
VIDEO! Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

My 2008 started doing this a couple of months ago. At first it was once a week. Now it's every day. It's not only when the wheel is at dead center either. It happens when it's sitting still and when driving at all speeds. Makes for a possibly dangerous situation, especially on the highway where I am being shifted within my lane. Calling the dealer tomorrow morning. Good to read the previous comments about the things that didn't work to fix it. Here's a video of it shaking while sitting in a parking spot:

Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

Wow! That is insane. Ive never seen a car do this before. Im taking it that electric steering motor is screwing up.

Holy cow that is is weird. Thank god I don't have electric power steering.

Let us know the outcome....
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

Wow that would freak me out!
Re: VIDEO! Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

i just bought a 2008 LT1 and am having the same problem - just returned to dealer and they realigned the steering wheel (set it to zero) said it was fixed and on the way back from the dealer it started happening again. Have a call into the dealer. Did they fix your issue
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

Mine shook just like in the video. The resetting of the original mechanism didn't work for me either. I turned around and went right back to the dealer when it started doing it again on the way home. I haven't had any more problems since they replaced the entire motor and control assembly.
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

ookay so I'm having the same issue with my 09 malibu. I've had it worked on 2 times in one month. This is clearly a huge problem with the car. Anyone think GM will take the car back willingly and allow me to buy a better vehicle from chevy? Say a pickup? This car is unsafe to drive in this condiition. I won't even let my gf drive this car
Re: Steering wheel moving by itself

My 2005 w/ 102K is doing the same thing as the video shows. I have always had the occasional "twitch", but now it does it all the time unless the wheel is turned slightly. Has anyone figured out the problem and repaired it themselves?? I'd rather put a flare in the gas tank than take it to a dealer!
2008 Malibu LS Steering Problem

I brought my Malibu May 15, 2009 as a Certify Used Car, from the beginning I asked about the steering because it was weird and was told that it's an Electric steering and that it is normal. From May until Oct. I complained to my husband that the steering is weird, that it just doesn't feel right, he told me I just got to get uses to the new car. By Oct. the steering wheel just got worst but I couldn't get my husband to understand the problem that I was having so he did nothing. In Oct. When the car was idol at a red light or before leave the drive way the steering wheel would jerk back and forth and when driving down the highway the steering wheel would turn left and right. I had to continuously turn the wheel in the opposite direction it was turning to stay in my lane. One of the things that I thougth would happen is I would get pulled over for DWI because of the steering wheel. The second thing was this car is going to caughs me to have an accident and kill myself or someone else. This contunie until March 2010, my husband was watching the news and they announced a recall on some of the Chevrolet models (my car not on list) but it made my husband think for 1st time that maybe my car was having a steering issues. So, on March 4 he took my car to dealer to have looked at, and they found nothing wrong (was told that it was normal). Well, then on April 26 my husband was taking my car to Jiffy Lube to get an oil change and he experienced for the 1st time a problem with the steering, so he decided to take my car to another dealer to have the steering looked at again found nothing wrong (again electric steering normal) to me there is nothing normal about it.

Well, on May 4, I was heading to gym and why at a redlight my steering wheel started doing it's thing and I just happening to got a new iPhone and it was sitting next to me so I picked up my iPhone and turned it on and started recording my steering wheel (NO HANDS ON WHEEL) I GOT 29 SECONDS OF RECORDING. I drove to dealer and showed them the video and asked them if that looks normal (NOT). They had me bring my car in on May 6, then they called me to tell me my car was fixed (AGAIN NOT) my car is back in the shop today May 10.

JUST AN FYI IT'S NOT NORMAL
YES I GOT USED TO IT
BUT IT'S NOT NORMAL

Re: 2008 Malibu LS Steering Problem

You shouldn't have to "get used to it" because it's not an acceptable performance. I'm just aghast that your husband has been so slow to react to your concern! E-gads, man, where's your head? (To your hubby.) But when he finally drove the car himself, suddenly it's an issue. Doesn't he believe you, or feel that your concern is worth his time? Sorry to digress.

The electric PS has been written about by a number of other members. Doing a search may yield some more info for you. Also, if the dealer you take it to says it's acceptable then take it to another or call GM.

When I bought my car I had no idea that EPS was even available or standard on the 4-cylinder models. I'm glad I got hydraulic on my V6. If this happened to me as you describe it, I'd be down at the dealership so much that I'd have to change my address!

Let us know how it turns out.
Re: 2008 Malibu LS Steering Problem

Oh, no don't think that about my hubby please it's not his fault really. Because he really didn't know what to do because it didn't make any since in what I was telling him that was going on but everytime I would say something about it he would always say things to other people and ask if they ever heard of anything like it (Everyone always said NO, and said it's new your wife just needs to get use to it) I have a brother in-law that is a mechanic and he didn't know either. He said it's really hard to find a problem if you don't see it for yourself and with these new car having electric steering the answer was always it maybe normal and that I just need to get used to it. BUT ALWAYS BELIEVED MYSELF THAT IT'S NOT NORMAL ONEDAY SOMEONE WELL KNOW IT, BUT IT MAY TAKE A COUPLE OF ACCIDENTS AND MAYBE EVEN DEAD FOR THEM TO FIND THE PROBLEM.

Now, I have a new problem. I have video of what my steering wheel does and showed it to the dealership manager and mechanic manager and NOW HAVE CONFORMATION THAT IT'S NOT NORMAL. They had my car in shop on Thrusday and called me and told me they fixed the problem, I was very happy and picked up my car and by Friday it did it again and because it did it again I'M NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR The car was taking to shop for repairs yesterday, they called me today and told me it's ready and I told them that I can't pick up, my husband will have to do it because I can't get back in that car. I want them to process this car under the Maryland Lemon Law.

Re: 2008 Malibu LS Steering Problem

Are the steering wheel movements subtle, or very obvious. Do you have to make very slight corrections to keep the car straight, or are they major corrections?
Re: 2008 Malibu LS Steering Problem

E_Net_Rider (I assume one and the same) had started an interesting thread on http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f53/eps-zeroing-vs-recalibration-87143/ that may be relevant. I suspect the techs in evelyn's case just performed calibration procedures as a first go. There's no loss of power assist and thus it has to be a sensor or control module problem. The way I understand it, there's the EPS motor assembly sitting on top of the steering column assembly. Hopefully they replaced one or both of them this time.
