Suspect bad part not replaced, how

How can I tell what the original part number is for my 2001 Malibu? Repairman said replaced part, but it never really worked right. Out of warranty now.My husband pulled "replaced" part out and put in new one and works fine. Can I tell if this replaced part is the original?
