I finished tinting my tail lights and side markers today. Took a good amount of work for prep though. Overall I am happy with them being this is only the second set I have done. The side markers look a lot darker, but they really aren't.

They look real good. Any idea what they have looked like if you had not taped the clear? I think I am going to try this.

I wanted to try this way first to see if I liked it. I think if I didn't tape off the clear it may have been too dark for the LED brake lights to shine through.

If I decide to I can sand it down some and put one more coat on over the whole light to tint the clear part only lightly. Just easier to stop on step short in case I change my mind. One thing I do like is it's different from others. I just really hated the bright red with everything else dark.

I'm kinda likin' my new LTZ lights that I just installed. I like the red up against my black paint, and I like the current look of four clear lenses, but I'm thinkin' about doing the opposite of what you did by smoking the clears lightly and leaving the reds stock.

Hey, elcompaLalo, can you punch up a 'shopped look of what I just described? I could see it before I do it, and I might not like it after seeing it.

I used to hate the LTZ tails before now I like them. I would like to see how it would look with just the clear tinted, I just can't picture it.

I think you have good taste. Silver opposite red isn't quite as appealing as silver opposite smoke. But since my paint is black and I don't want a blacked out car, I figured I'd keep the red and maybe smoke the clears. That way there's a separation of the elements (dark, red, dark) instead of just a continuation of dark and dark. Gotta take into account the canvas we're painting on, eh?

That is a good point, buy a new car it is like a blank canvas ready to be transformed into something different, in some ways a piece of art. No offense to anyone, but a completely blacked out car is way overplayed IMO. The more I think about it, I think what your are planning would look good, just a lot of prep with masking. Good thing there is small grooves in the lenses to use as a guide.

Great job on those lights. LTZs are the best candidates for the smoking because if you just painted the red part you don't impede the visibility of the brake lights or signals and still get a very clean look.

Sure thing, PM me a high res shot of the rear end of the car and I'll send it back chopped.

+1 to your mod, here in so-cal cops tend to keep an eye out for these type of mods. That's why i haven't gone that route yet. Everyone i know that has seen my ride have asked me "why haven't you smoked out the back yet"? My answer to them has been "i have smoked them, just it's been the front tires I've been smoking". ;)

Here's what elcomp did to my LTZ tails! Looks good, eh? I'm definitely thinking about doing it if they look that good. He even 'shopped in the PTM bowtie. Awesome job, dude! Thanks!

I like it. I don't think it would work on any other color than black though. Keep in mind, if you don't like it when it is done it can be sanded down to normal and re-cleared. The PTM bow-tie would complete it nicely.

Should tint them almost black would look even better but the markers look great! I actually sprayed mine with the dark grey metallic body color theyre very dark but look awesome
Did you use thinned out paint to do that? I wanted to do that for my old ram, but didn't want to attract cops. I may go darker, just wanted to play it safe since it is harder to go backwards, but I definitely like the masked off clear part for the car.

Now all I gotta do is figure out what tinting paint to buy and how to do it. I think it looks unique and attractive. I just hope I can duplicate it!

Green masking tape, a small exacto knife, VHT nightshades, and time will get you to were you want it. The small groove in the taillight makes things easy for trimming the tape. Follow this how to link and it will come out nice. http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/How_to_Smoke_Taillights

One other tip, I have not had good luck with duplicolor clear coat in the past couple years, I would stay away from it. I used plastikote clear doing a couple coats of it. Good luck!
