Touch up Paint on bare metal scratch? Need tips

So recently found out I got a gnarly scratch on my trunk. No idea how it got there, but one scratch is basically bare metal and the other scratch seemed like the clear coat just pealed off. I got the AC Delco Four in One Touch up paint that is paint matched. Anyway how would I go about doing this? From what I gathered all I know is
  • Clean the area
  • Light coats of the paint until its a little above the original clear coat
  • rubbing compound
  • clear coat
  • polish
  • wax
But I've also read and watched video with people using 3000 grit sandpaper instead of the rubbing compound. But it would be greatly appreciative if any of you guys have done something similar and would like to pass down some knowledge. I attached a photo to give you guys an idea of what I am working with.
