What brand of fluid did you use, and was it specifically labelled dexron VI or just compatible (multi vehicle)? When I drained my 15 for the first time at 29k miles, I only got a little over 3.5qts as well. I refilled with the same amount, then started car, drove it till hot, pulled check plug (while car was running, level and in park), and added 3/4 quart of valvoline dex VI until it started coming out the check plug. Car still shifts like crap (mostly just hard downshift when slowing) even after 2 drains and 4k miles. I'm going to do it again in another 5k miles at my next oil change.

I have been using Walmart Brand Super Tech Dexron VI for my 2008 10 years now. Never have had any problem. There was a time I switched to the ACDelco original because they were on sale on Amazon. Never noticed any difference.

I think it is indeed dirt, or actually automatic clutch debris. It gets dirty very quick even after a change. I do mine every 5-7.5K when I do my oil, and it has been getting a little cleaner each time, but it never looks new. Mine is a 2013 and I have been doing it for about 2 years since about 70K. Done it about 4 times.
The reason I said it might not be dirty because my experience with My 08 Bu. When the first time I changed that car, It had more miles than this one and the fluid still looked like new! So it does not make sense to me how come a newer model performs much poorer than the older one on this critical component?

I also came across some article on the color of the oil. it said the color might not tell the true story. Some oil just has the dark color originally
That's being said. I agree that because draining the transmission fluid on this one so easier (than the 08), we should change it earlier than the recommended severe maintenance for peace of mind.

any fluid advertised as Dex VI must meet the spec + is good to go. used tech on girlfriends 13 @ 50 thou, but after learning you can't get the filter without REMOVING the tranny sooner is better!! prolly about 3 thou for tranny so even overprice big name fluids are cheap comparatively IMO!!!

What are you using? Here are some cheap options:

https://www.pepboys.com/pennzoil-mv-automatic-transmission-fluid-quart/product/9189304?quantity=1

When this is back in stock:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Tech-DEXRON-VI-Automatic-Transmission-Fluid-1-qt/17134873

A lot of people use this, as did I, but I am going with the pennzoil next and then probably valvoline or supertech dex vi

Valvoline™️ MaxLife™️ Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid - 1 Gallon

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-MaxLife-Multi-Vehicle-Automatic-Transmission-Fluid-1-Gallon/15125768
I used original AC-Delco Dexron-4

You mean dex 6 right? I think a synthetic would be better, but if you are set on ac delco, there's this: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-GM-88861954-DEXRON-VI-Transmission/dp/B00BK7M082/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1544068100&sr=8-4&keywords=Dexron+vi

I'm not sure I've heard of 6, but I'll take a look. I just used what came out or Factory, because I heard both good and bad with Valvoline Max Life, that I just didn't want to chance issues with price and all.
Was Dexron-6 recommended for 2014? what's the difference? I don't want to do more harm than good. If it's not broke, don't try fixing it...lol

different walmart's sock different products, but you can get stuff shipped to store FREE with a minimum purchase from walmart.com. to meet Dex 6 must use some synthetics in the blend to meet the spec for it so all dex 6 is at least semi-synthetic

Walmart always ship to store free without minimum purchase. Ship to home requires a minimum of $25 purchase for free shipping.

Reading along in this thread, just so everyone knows, you can buy a tranny aftermarket pan with a drain plug if yours does not have one, (at least for my '05). I will never, ever, grasp the logic of no dipstick, a $4,000 component that lives and dies by the condition and amount of it's fluid with no F-ing ready means to check it.

don't forget shipping cost under $35 unless your prime + they charge tax on most everything they can!!!
What are we complaining about? Tax? Come on. Also, who doesn't have prime nowadays, and even if you don't, it's Christmas time. Add a $10+ gift for someone and get free shipping. What was the point of this besides just to belly ache?

Ours has a drain plug so this wouldn't do anything for us, but I agree about the dipstick. Maybe they want the system as closed as possible to eliminate contamination so the fluid lasts longer? At least there's the check plug on the side, but you have to remove the tire to get to it, lol.

Dexron VI (the spec) is a synthetic blend...Delco does sell a Dexron VI that is fully synthetic and it will have that written on the label...just like the original Dexos 1 (Generation 1) was a synthetic blend and other oil companies made an oil that met the standard but was fully synthetic...

omitting simple things save $$$ + add profits for manufacturers + anything that makes DIY harder is a side benefit!! a drain plug is good BUT an filter we could easily get to is more important, so the lack of changing the filter makes earlier + more frequent changes more important!! any fluid must meet a certain spec to be sold as such, but it can surely surpass that spec without issue.

Second drain after 1K miles driving. I seemed to get more out this time almost 5qts. I had put in 4.6qts last time. While it was draining, I took out the jack to level the car. I also waited longer this time until it stopped dripping.
The color did not look much different from last change. It is supposed 50new 50 old for this drain.
