I'm not sure if this is the right group but seems more extreme than regular maintenance.

I have an 09 2.4l Malibu LT with 145K. I'm changing the timing chain and noticed more crud buildup than I expected, especially on the intake side. I've used full synthetic oil ever since the vehicle was out of warranty.

What can I use to clean the inside of the valve cover. Degreaser, brake cleaner, gasoline, straight motor flush??? What is effective and safe for the engine?

There's also some debris in the valve area. Plus I'll need to clean out the stuck gasket material. What solvent would be best for this, Xylene? I think I will use a shop vac and use razor around flat surfaces to get a good seal.

I'm open to the expertise of the group for suggestions!

Thank you,

Sirdeeker
