Probably just metal expanding as it gets hot. If so, it's normal.

The engine is cool
Odd, it sounds like the engine is on which means warming up. Other than that, someone tapping on it for giggles or a creature trapped in the air box knocking.

It may be cool, but like @campb292 says, it sounds like it's on, which means that it is heating things up.

Perhaps some more info might be in order here, such as knowing if the engine is running or if you're just in a noisy environment that tricks into thinking that.

Also, please read this post and provide more information.

Yes, the engine is running and did not take a few minutes
The engine temperature did not reach normal

This sound repeats at different times, even one of my friends has it!

That's what we're saying.

The engine and the exhaust are all cold. You start it and heat causes things to expand. Those heat-related noises are the kinds of noises that are normal.
