Hi all. My 08 LT1 chrome wheel cover somehow got cracked. Normally its caused by impact of hitting a curb, etc. But mine doesnt even have a mark on both the Tire and Chrome finish. Started hearring a noise the other day. Looked last night and saw it. Now I need to run over to the dealer. Probably going to tell me I need to buy a new one. Which I am guessing is going to cost about $70.

See if it's covered under warranty first. Dunno, but it might be. Hope it is for your sake.

It broke where the Tire meets the rim. Maybe I can get ahold of the dealer today and find out.
Thanks

Look at the rim, you may have a minor dent. Sounds like you may have drove over a curb making a right hand turn or something.

Either way, it unfortunately will probably not be covered unless you have a good dealer relationship and especially if the wheel has a little dent. If you look on Ebay you can find covers for about 30-40 bucks last time i was on there...

Dealer told me $80+ Tax. And I dont get any extra off for working for the DOD or Advance Auto Parts. I need to shop around.

I have a similar style chrome wheel cover, horrible curb scratch on it - it appears to be somehow glued onto a rim...can I just pry off the damaged chrome cover, and glue a new cover in place? Dealer wants about $500 to replace the whole thing. Anyone familiar with this style wheel? It's a 2010 LT2.

That is called a "Chrometech" wheel. Just what you said, a chrome hubcap glued on a wheel. $500 is crazy! Check Ebay, I say one a few weeks ago, like new, for $100.

See attached the photo...trying to track down the exact part. What is the best type of glue to use/fasten? As well as what's best way to pry apart? Do I have to worry about balancing issues?
Not sure if you can repair those, like I said, I would just check Ebay for a whole new wheel. I have no idea how you would get the one off and all the glue residue so you could attach a new one.

I'm pretty sure with the right amount of work and product you could get it off -- but aside from that its not a separate P/N(I think) and you'd break it getting it off(i think), so would have nothing to put back on. I'd say either buy an ebay replacement (had bad luck with those myself with dents)... OR

What i'd recommend is a cover up for now with some chrome and clear coat spray paint. Just make sure you sand smooth the damager area first and take the wheel off to save all the prep work with regards to over spray you'd need around the paint. Still tape off alot around the good parts of the wheel! And then keep an eye out for a junkyard replacement you can inspect. Just be sure to pick one from the opposite end of the accident.

to me the balancing afterwards will be the hardest part. the glue fills it very well there. the wheel and cap were most likely tightly clamped together for gluing to get even distribution and to avoid empty voids. my concern with gluing it would be if it ends up crooked or something.

The left rear wheel cover on my 2010 1 LT with 8,900 miles had an area about the size of a pencil eraser where the chrome had popped off. Another area on the wheel cover showed that the chrome had "wrinkled" and looked like it was going to come off as well. I don't recall hearing anything like a rock or road debris hitting the wheel.

I stopped by my dealer's service department on Wednesday and made an appointment for an oil change Friday (08/13) and also asked that they take a look at the cover. I just now have returned home from my appointment. What a pleasant surprise I had when they replaced the wheel cover with no questions asked.

I will admit I've had a couple of situations with my cars being damaged or dirtied during service appointments at this dealer. However, I will have to say that overall, I am very pleased with Dieffenbach GM Superstore in Rockingham, NC., especially with Mandy the service advisor, and Camp, the service department manager.

They haven't forgotten my bad experience last year when the mechanic scarred up the leather seat of my LaCrosse by getting in with his cell phone attached to his belt. In fact when I made the appointment on Friday, Mandy verified that I wanted a certain technician do the work and not the one that caused the damage to my car before.

I really wonder just what information they have in their computer as to the temperament or persnickety ways of some of their customers. Anyhow, if there are any GM people perusing this message board regarding customer's issues with their cars, I'll have to give Dieffenbach high marks for this visit.
