Hello,
is anyone having issue with key fob? I have 2017 2.0 premier. I got it 2 weeks ago. It only has 850 miles on it. I get a message on instrument cluster " Remote not detected" and I cannot use the key fob at all. The car does not recognize the key fob. I cant lock the car or even start it. I can only start it by placing it in the transmitter thing in the center console. It happened to me twice now. I thought its the battery, but its not because I changed the battery when it first happened. I thought someone put a defective battery on my fob. when I saw the message " Remote not detected" today, I realized its not the battery because I just changed it 2 weeks ago ( when I bought the car). It seems when I leave the car for like 5-10 mins, the problem goes away. Has anyone experienced this? Its really frustrating for a brand new car.

Take it straight back to the dealership and let them sort it out. Try to capture the event on video so the dealership has proof to look at and can't just send you on your way if it doesn't happen for them.

Should I take the LEDs off of the car when I take it to the dealer? It kinda bothers me because i'm sure it has nothing to do with my LED bulbs.
I usually err on the side of caution on these things. If you want to be 100% safe, take them out. I wouldn't in this particular case. I'd just take it in with a video showing the problem.

I've had the key fob problem twice now since May with our 2017 Premier. Each time it's happened within a couple minutes of having the trunk open. No idea it that's related. I've had to pry the cover off the door handle, open it with the "key" and then put the fob in the center console. That clears it. I asked at the dealer and they didn't have any idea what it might be and said to bring it in when it's "not working". Not sure how they expect me to get it there.

Okey. I think I found the solution. I might be wrong, but I think this could be related to the 4G LTE OnStart system and WiFi of the car. This issue happen only when I turned on the 4G LTE and Wifi on the car. My guess is that when WiFi is on in the car, they may cause signal interference. This specially happens when there are multiple people in your car with their phone's WiFi. Its been almost 2 month this issue hasn't come back . Please turn off the car's WiFi and onStar 4G LTE hotspot and see if this happens again. Let us know how this goes .

Ok guys. I can confirm this is definitely has something to do with OnStar 4G LTE Hotspot . Yesterday, my trial date for OnStar just ended and it automatically turned the Hotspot on for some reason. And guess what happened? " Remote not detected" just like before! Turned off the Hotspot, drove 5 mins and everything went back to normal operation. This has never happened for the last three month when the hotspot was off. This happened every time I turned my hotspot ON. This is the 4th time.

Well I was about to start a new thread on this but I saw this one so I will just reply here.

My car is a 17 LT........I have a 60 mile on way commute to work each day, and I had 2 days in a row this week that when I got to work and turned off the car, I got the "remote not detected" message.....and like others, could not lock the car unless I used the app on my phone.....so I locked the car, went to work....after work I simply walked up to the car and it recognized the remote and I unlocked the door by pushing the button on the door handle.

This problem happened to us on the first day of owning it........but has not happened since and we've had the car for 9 months now.

Our trial period on our WiFi ended a long time ago and the WiFi on the car has been turned off.....so I don't feel that has anything to do with this issue.

I'm thinking of making an appointment with the dealer..........but just like my check engine light that was on, but went off......the dealer never finds anything wrong, can't duplicate the problem.

I had this same problem this morning. I started the car with my OnStar app, and went to take my kid to school - but could not get in. Door buttons wouldn't work. Used OnStar to unlock - but kept saying fob not detected. Ended up having to take an Uber to take my kid to school. Got home 15 mins later, and all was fine. I was about to call for a towtruck. I called Chev, and they said to bring it in, and right away they swapped out the receiver and I was good to go. The TSB is bang on - and the dealer knew right away.

Definitely not just Premiers doing this. My Hybrid has done this to me 5 or 6 times. The last time was a corker...we were out in public and I couldn't lock the car. I'll be taking it in next week to see if they'll swap out that receiver...

Thanks to Dale_K for the TSB link!

Yep- my 2016 LS does it sometimes too. More so with one key fob than the other. The location of the key seems to impact it for me IE: Works better in right pocket closer to the door from outside, then it does in left pocket. If it doesnt detect it, you can still hit the unlock button and the car will recognize it and allow it to start

I got my '17 MH during Christmas week of 2016. The 4G WiFi has been shut off since the end of the three-month trial period. "Remote Not Found" happened once during that trial period, and about five more time since. So no, the 4G WiFi appears to have had no effect on the problem, one way or the other. I just got the car back today from having the module replaced, so it'll be interesting to see if the problem has been solved or not...

Yes. The receiver needs to be changed. I took my car to dealer and they changed it for me. No issue since then. I show them the video that key fob is acting up. This is funny, but my car would start without the key fob!!!

I had that receiver replaced in August of 2017. Not one issue since.

I have a friend with a 2017 Camaro and has the same problem, he has to walk away from the car far enough to be out of range for the remote. Then go back and it works. It happened to him 2 or 3 times before he called the dealer and they told him what to do and they also told him it was a very common issue they are having.
Sounds to me like a glitch they need to work out.

I had the same problem with my LT. On my last oil change I mentioned it to the dealer and they checked it out and ended up replacing the battery in the Fob. I was skeptical but it’s been working as it should since and it’s been about 3 months

So......what exactly is a bulletin? Is in on this forum? Is it notice that's provided to dealer......that is obvious that they never read.

Do we have to tell dealers about this bulletin?

Do dealers even communicate with OnStar? I had check engine light come on 2x, an of course the dealer found nothing wrong, can't duplicate problem.....But Onstar ran diagnostic check and found same problem both times.

Thanks to the folks here for linking to the bulletin. I was able to print it out and gave it to the dealer when I dropped the car there for this problem 2 weeks ago. They did replace the module and...so far, so good. No problems since.

I have had this problem 2 times now once right after I bought like you. I finally got someone from herb conn. to tell me to put the key fob inside the center console there is a spot for it on the back wall you'll see it when you lift up the center console cover. this just happened to me again after a year so I am going to dealer to see if it needs to be programbed again or something.

There is a spot for the key fob inside the center console .lift up the center lid and up against the back wall is a slot that the key fob fits into, put it in there when it won't work wait a few minutes and it should work. I also have a 2017 and it just happened to me again yesterday. The firsts time was right after i bought it last year. This is OK in an emergency situation but I'm bringing mine to the dealership tomorrow to see if they can tell me why this is happening. It is nice to know that I am not the only one though if anybody else knows exactly why this is happening it would be nice to know thanks

I have the 2016 Malibu LT with all upgrades available including the push-to-start. I've had nothing but problems with the car (USB ports stopped working 1 month after getting the car, battery died ~1yr in seemingly for no reason, engine needed to be entirely replaced due to a cracked piston), and as of yesterday, the car absolutely refused to recognize my key fob similar to what you were describing. It has always done this on-and-off, and I'd have to fiddle around with it or step our of the car and get back in, things of that nature. Yesterday it took a little over an hour before the car would recognize the fob.

Without trying to be condescending, I sure hope you leased that vehicle... This experience has made me absolutely dread the Malibu line in its current state. Still love me some Chevy vehicles, but the Malibu is dead to me after this lease is over.

Same thing is happening to my sons 2017 malibu. Car wouldnt turn off " no key detected" Turned off the wifi and he was able to turn the car off finally. (Not sure why he had it on, since he doesnt subscribe to the wifi). Hopefully this is a solution.

It's happened to me twice now, as well. No pre warning that the fob has issues or is about to die. I turned my car off to get gas, went to get in it and try to start it. Same message flashed across dash, it couldn't find key fob and it was in my hand. I have replaced the battery less than 3 months ago. I had to walk to 2 nearby stores to search for a new battery again. I replaced it, and my car started. I was on my lunch break from work, was late getting back. This is so annoying and frustrating, when it just takes a crap without any type of warning. Then your stranded where ever your car leaves you at. I bought a 4 pack of the dang batteries to carry in my purse ( for future issues). I don't think the batteries should be going out that fast. Seems like maybe another issue could be making the fobs stop working.

Take your new car back to the dealership and let them know of your issue.* good luck !

Yes. The exact same thing is happening to me but I didn't know where to put this key. This is the second time!! You say put key somewhere in the middle console? I will go down to car and take a look. Its been an hour now so maybe it will just start. This is what happened the last time....it just started!
