Definitely not just Premiers doing this. My Hybrid has done this to me 5 or 6 times. The last time was a corker...we were out in public and I couldn't lock the car. I'll be taking it in next week to see if they'll swap out that receiver...

Thanks to Dale_K for the TSB link!
Yep- my 2016 LS does it sometimes too. More so with one key fob than the other. The location of the key seems to impact it for me IE: Works better in right pocket closer to the door from outside, then it does in left pocket. If it doesnt detect it, you can still hit the unlock button and the car will recognize it and allow it to start

I had the same problem with my LT. On my last oil change I mentioned it to the dealer and they checked it out and ended up replacing the battery in the Fob. I was skeptical but it’s been working as it should since and it’s been about 3 months

Remote key fob receiver needs to be replaced. There is a bulletin about this.

So......what exactly is a bulletin? Is in on this forum? Is it notice that's provided to dealer......that is obvious that they never read.

Do we have to tell dealers about this bulletin?

Do dealers even communicate with OnStar? I had check engine light come on 2x, an of course the dealer found nothing wrong, can't duplicate problem.....But Onstar ran diagnostic check and found same problem both times.

Thanks to the folks here for linking to the bulletin. I was able to print it out and gave it to the dealer when I dropped the car there for this problem 2 weeks ago. They did replace the module and...so far, so good. No problems since.

I have had this problem 2 times now once right after I bought like you. I finally got someone from herb conn. to tell me to put the key fob inside the center console there is a spot for it on the back wall you'll see it when you lift up the center console cover. this just happened to me again after a year so I am going to dealer to see if it needs to be programbed again or something.

There is a spot for the key fob inside the center console .lift up the center lid and up against the back wall is a slot that the key fob fits into, put it in there when it won't work wait a few minutes and it should work. I also have a 2017 and it just happened to me again yesterday. The firsts time was right after i bought it last year. This is OK in an emergency situation but I'm bringing mine to the dealership tomorrow to see if they can tell me why this is happening. It is nice to know that I am not the only one though if anybody else knows exactly why this is happening it would be nice to know thanks

I have the 2016 Malibu LT with all upgrades available including the push-to-start. I've had nothing but problems with the car (USB ports stopped working 1 month after getting the car, battery died ~1yr in seemingly for no reason, engine needed to be entirely replaced due to a cracked piston), and as of yesterday, the car absolutely refused to recognize my key fob similar to what you were describing. It has always done this on-and-off, and I'd have to fiddle around with it or step our of the car and get back in, things of that nature. Yesterday it took a little over an hour before the car would recognize the fob.

Without trying to be condescending, I sure hope you leased that vehicle... This experience has made me absolutely dread the Malibu line in its current state. Still love me some Chevy vehicles, but the Malibu is dead to me after this lease is over.

Same thing is happening to my sons 2017 malibu. Car wouldnt turn off " no key detected" Turned off the wifi and he was able to turn the car off finally. (Not sure why he had it on, since he doesnt subscribe to the wifi). Hopefully this is a solution.

It's happened to me twice now, as well. No pre warning that the fob has issues or is about to die. I turned my car off to get gas, went to get in it and try to start it. Same message flashed across dash, it couldn't find key fob and it was in my hand. I have replaced the battery less than 3 months ago. I had to walk to 2 nearby stores to search for a new battery again. I replaced it, and my car started. I was on my lunch break from work, was late getting back. This is so annoying and frustrating, when it just takes a crap without any type of warning. Then your stranded where ever your car leaves you at. I bought a 4 pack of the dang batteries to carry in my purse ( for future issues). I don't think the batteries should be going out that fast. Seems like maybe another issue could be making the fobs stop working.

Take your new car back to the dealership and let them know of your issue.* good luck !

Yes. The exact same thing is happening to me but I didn't know where to put this key. This is the second time!! You say put key somewhere in the middle console? I will go down to car and take a look. Its been an hour now so maybe it will just start. This is what happened the last time....it just started!

Hello,
is anyone having issue with key fob? I have 2017 2.0 premier. I got it 2 weeks ago. It only has 850 miles on it. I get a message on instrument cluster " Remote not detected" and I cannot use the key fob at all. The car does not recognize the key fob. I cant lock the car or even start it. I can only start it by placing it in the transmitter thing in the center console. It happened to me twice now. I thought its the battery, but its not because I changed the battery when it first happened. I thought someone put a defective battery on my fob. when I saw the message " Remote not detected" today, I realized its not the battery because I just changed it 2 weeks ago ( when I bought the car). It seems when I leave the car for like 5-10 mins, the problem goes away. Has anyone experienced this? Its really frustrating for a brand new car.
Hello,

That happen to me when I purchased June 2017 with Malibu. I was locked out of my car and only way I was able to get my luggage to call on star. When I took to dealership; they didn't do anything for me. I have gone to the same dealership 3 more times after that they have replace batteries on my 2 key fobs. Dealership personal accuse me way I drained the battery I don't know how? I had to pay for batteries and install fee, without letting me know. Once again it happen to me again, as of last night "No remote key was detected place key in transmitter pocket, then start your vehicle", I was not able to turn off or turn on my engine nor lock my car. I was able to lock using OnStar app on my phone. I am really frustrated. It happen to me random times. It sounds like you are experiencing what I'm experiencing. I will not returning to same dealership. Will call Chevy Service and explain and there is a TSB#16-na-396 have list of 2017 Malibu. In my personal opinion it's transmitter issue. if I find out more information and I will post more.

Hello. I am having the exact same issue. I will hit 2 years and 30k miles in August.
4 days after purchasing car, battery dead would not power on. Then shortly after that service rear vision started showing up randomly on the dash. Shortly after that no remote detected when I was trying to enter or exit the car, finally 3 seperate times the car stated no remote detected while driving on the free way and cars engine cut off, and the AC "popped" and started shooting out hot air while the radio kept playing. Took the car in 2 times before this issue and they stated they fixed and replaced (replaced key fobs). After this happened the 3rd time I was close enough to coast the car to them and show the issue. They then decided it was the 6 sense and pulled out the 6 sense and replaced it. Here I am 6 month later and exact same issues came back first service rear vision, second no remote detected and the cutting engine off while driving. It's currently at the dealership and they are claiming it's the bsttety (state that it's failing, battery is barely 1.5 years old) and that both of the 6 month old key fobs batteries are dead. I've refused to pick the car up until they can actually confirm this is the issue. But at this point I'm ready to call this car a lemon.

relax your not going crazy i have a 2018 camaro and im having the same damn issue and the dealer cant find the issue because by the time i take it to the dealer it corrects itself been having this problem for a month and a half now

I have a friend with a 2017 Camaro and has the same problem, he has to walk away from the car far enough to be out of range for the remote. Then go back and it works. It happened to him 2 or 3 times before he called the dealer and they told him what to do and they also told him it was a very common issue they are having.
Sounds to me like a glitch they need to work out.
i have a 2018 camaro and i swear this issue is driving me crazy and everytime i take it to the dealer it corrects itself like what the hell

I think Amir long ago stopped going crazy over the remote not detected thing. The post is 4 years old and Amir doesn't even have the car anymore. You might check with the Camaro forums or NHTSA website to see if there are any bulletins for your specific year/VIN. There was the for 2016-17 Malibu but unsure if Camaro was included.
