Driver Confidence packages I and II

I purchased a Malibu Premier with Driver Confidence packages I and II, all the electronic aids. Package II can only be had if you buy Package I. Three features standout for me: Semi Auto Parking Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Assist.

Semi Auto Parking Assist, works well, I have been very successful everytime I used it properly. It was scary the first few times because the wheel starts turning by itself and the Malibu seems to get so close to the parked car in front of you - but - you gain confidence in it. The parking can do parallel and perpendicular. The DIC gives you prompts to stop, go into reverse or forward. You control the brake. To perpendicular park, you hold the parking assist button down to change modes. I did not understand that at first and wound up running into the curb a couple of times before I got it. I wanted to parallel park but the car was going into perpendicular parking mode.

Adaptive Cruise Control is great. You choose following distances between you and the car ahead of you, long, medium or short. Then it will continue to work from hiway speed to 1 mile per hour without gas pedal input from you. So this is great in slow moving traffic situations that I face on L.A. freeways. As long as you do not come to a complete stop, the cruise control is active. When you do come to a complete stop it will turn off and you have to manually resume it.

Lane Departure Assist is a hint of the driverless car. It sees the lane markings on either side of the car and will mechanically nudges the car steering wheel towards the center of the lane as you venture towards either lane marking. If you use your blinker as you change lanes nothing will happen but again it is a little disconcerting the first few times it happens. There is a slight vibration and it begins to nudge the steering wheel back towards the center of the lane you are in by offering resistance to your driving input - if you meant to change lanes but did not use signal.

I have the same features on my Premier, and I love the adaptive cruise control. I can leave it on while on my Long Island highways, and not have to worry about constantly breaking. My '13 Malibu had lane departure warning, but it was a warning only; it did not vibrate the steering wheel or try to return to the lane. The new version is far better. The overall technology in the '16 is so far superior to prior models. Great job, Chevy!

Adaptive Cruise control is great but I did run into a situation where it can actually get you into trouble. Freeway traffic had been running at normal speed but suddenly it began to slow quickly. I was already in a slower lane and my lane was slowing down faster than the lane to my left so I turned into the left lane. The traffic in that lane suddenly started to really slow down as I was beginning to change lanes.

The sensor beam probably has to be very narrow so as not to be confused by cars on either side of you, so during the few seconds I was straddling between the lanes, the cruise control saw a clear path ahead, it was reading the gap between both lanes and figured the path was clear again so it started to accelerate quickly. By the time I had fully entered the lane left of me, the car was speeding toward the back of the car ahead of me which was now braking quickly. I had to hit my brakes to stop the cruise control and avoid rear ending the car ahead of me (at least that was how it seemed to me at that moment) but that was disconcerting. This all happened very quickly so maybe I over reacted and the cruise control might have righted the situation but I did not want to find out.

I guess the moral of this story is to not change lanes in bumper to bumper traffic until you have plenty of space to maneuver ahead of you. As long as you stay in your lane it functions beautifully.

Yikes that sounds kinda scary. I wouldn't use it in bumper to bumper traffic at all.
I see it says this about adaptive cruise control in the 2016 Malibu owners manual
ACC has limited braking ability
and may not have time to slow
the vehicle down enough to avoid
a collision with another vehicle
you are following. This can occur
when vehicles suddenly slow or
stop ahead, or enter your lane.
It also goes on to say this
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
may not detect and react to
stopped or slow-moving vehicles
ahead of you. For example, the
system may not brake for a
vehicle it has never detected
moving. This can occur in
stop-and-go traffic or when a
vehicle suddenly appears due to
a vehicle ahead changing lanes.
Your vehicle may not stop and
could cause a crash. Use caution
when using ACC. Your complete
attention is always required while
driving and you should be ready
to take action and apply the
brakes.
It also says not to use it on hilly roads or sharp curves. Also says it doesn't detect a vehicle until it is completely in your lane.

Make sure you read the manual about this feature so you know all about it.

I did glance through the manual but obviously that warning did not stick. It worked perfectly in bumper to bumper traffic. It was the changing of lanes while traffic was slowing that became the issue. I can understand technically why this happened and blame myself for putting myself in the situation. I really like the adaptive cruise control and will use it as often as I can. Just planning on being a little more careful.

I got my pre-owned 2016 Malibu Premiere this weekend, only to discover that it came with the Driver Confidence package I but not the II. I have the Lane Departure Assist, the pedestrian emergency auto brake, proximity alert and auto high beam, but no Adaptive Cruise Control :( or auto parking. I am European so I do not have any problems with parking in a tight space, but I really would like to have the ACC. I haven't gone yet to the dealer to ask whether the upgrade is possible. I believe it has all the hardware required for ACC since it has the camera, the sensors and displays, even the head up display indicator. It only lacks the electric parking brake.

Does anyone knows about this possible upgrade from Confidence package I to II?

Unfortunately the upgrade is not possible. ACC uses electronic parking brake to stop the vehicle. There are also other factors such as driver assistance module reprogramming and DIC reprogramming. Malibus with confidence package ll also have better automatic braking because of the radar support on the front. Camera and radar work together in most situations. It's really complicated and expensive to add all of these components.

I find the Parking assist too slow to locate an open spot, and especially if you are on a busy street, you have to drive so slow for the system to find an empty spot, and sometimes it doesn't find the obvious space, cars behind you are pissed because you are too slow..ect

Maybe they just need to put it in "AutoDrive" or "RoboDrive" mode.

Or maybe the Parking Assist needs to be updated so the human can put the butt of the car into the space and then rely on PA to do the rest. Then the folks behind you would be less stressed, since you used your signal and then started backing into the spot right away at a "normal" human speed.
